Yes makes sense! I’d agree with that. That’s super helpful. It’s similar to making small progress and opening the book and reading a few pages perhaps every day rather than trying to finish reading whole a book in one set
Rrmelecio, you seem to really love your mom. You got this. I believe in you!
Hi all! Though it’s already Wednesday, I’m gonna post on this one 🙂
• What are your life’s current, top three goals?
1. Get through COVID. Unfortunately, I caught it 🙁
2. Try not to infect my hubby
3. Still be able to perform at work despite COVID
• What progress did you make on those goals last week?
My performance at work has been good but I can do better. I’ve been learning as I go.
• What SPECIFIC, TANGIBLE RESULTS are you aiming for in those goals in the next 6 days?
To reach my weekly goal at work. Try to sleep at least 8 hours to get over with this COVID.
-If anyone caught COVID and get through it without so much suffering, please share your advice^^
I’m not saying any of the major areas should be eliminated. It seems rather too much to focus on. Maybe we should focus on one goal at a time and slowly build the baseline?
Hey Mark,
I love the article! While everything is true, the list seems to be too long.
For me, when I physically feel the best with no headaches or enough sleep and I am free from any big anxiety or major stressors, I perform the best. It’d be interesting to hear what the top 5 things you or other members try to focus on.
• What are your life’s current, top, two or three goals? (Name the large goals – the ones requiring months or years to succeed in.)
#1 Promotion
#2 Go to Mongolia, my home country
#3 Develop better habits to improve my physical health (getting consistent good sleep, eating healthy, and running/walking daily)
-What progress did you make on those goals last week?
Worked on complex projects at work. Asked for help from others when I’m stuck. Regarding #2, we have made some progress on the papers. Plus, even though I can’t go to Mongolia RN, I’ve been hanging out with my Mongolian girlfriends.
• What SPECIFIC, TANGIBLE RESULTS are you aiming for in those goals in the next 6 days?
I’d like to mainly focus on my work and be productive at work. That’d mean beating 90-100% performance metrics on a weekly basis.
• What is your largest opportunity this week? (Make sure you distinguish “opportunity” from things you “could” do.)
Not sure about this one.
• Name ONE (and ONLY ONE) thing you would like to do better than you did last week?
Be more assertive and trusting to myself when it comes to working on complex projects.
• What help do you need from us? Accountability ? Brainstorming? Advice? Quality listening while you think things out for yourself? An introduction?
Maybe advice on career growth.
Hey Mark, this is a great idea! I love it 😀 I’ll post perhaps on this Sunday!!
To me, friendship is an interesting concept. I love having friends who care about me or who genuinely are good people or who see the good in me. I don’t like friends that only come for partying or reach out when they need something from me. I also have trust issues where I question whether someone is truly nice or if they’re just faking to get something out of me.
That’s a great question, Mark! It’s kinda hard to say but I was heavily focused on academics since elementary school.
I remember participating in a Math competition in my first grade and had done tons of competitions through school. I did very much enjoy competing with kids, having that thrill of setting a goal, and winning competitions and making my mom and my family proud of me. That continued through my undergrad and grad school in States as well.
It’s really hard to pinpoint a single thing to say that this was the main reasons why I persevered. I think many factors contributed to it. For example, for my undergrad, I got a full-ride scholarship from my government, and there was no way I’d fail in classes because if I did, the government would cut the funding and I’d have to go back to my home country. In fact, that was one of my major fears before I left. The government set 3.0 GPA as the minimum and they’d cut the funding if students fail to get the minimum 3.0 GPA.
So all in all, I don’t know exactly why I persevered through things.. maybe it’s my personality?
What are your life’s largest, current two or three goals? (Name the large goals – the ones requiring months or years to succeed in.)
Get more efficient at my work. I am now assigned to more complex projects at work, so I do feel a bit uncomfortable or less efficient as I first need to go through that learning phase.
What progress did you make on those goals last week?
I’ve successfully finished multiple complex projects.
Name ONE (and ONLY ONE) thing you would like to do better this week than you did last week?
Ask for more help when I’m stuck.
Name the specific, measurable progress you are aiming to accomplish on these goals this week? What TANGIBLE RESULTS are you aiming for in the next 6 days?
Beat my performance metrics with 100% (it’s out of 100%) through this week.
What was your largest opportunity last week? Or what is your largest opportunity this week? (Make sure you distinguish “opportunity” from “could’s” and “should’s.”)
I don’t know if I had a large opportunity last week or I don’t remember that much. The largest opportunity this week will be seeking help from people who have more experience and are senior to me.
What help do you need from us? Accountability by asking about your progress? Brainstorming and suggestions? Advice from someone who’s done what you are working to accomplish? Just good listening while you talk (type) out loud thinking things out? A connection or introduction to someone? Please NAME what help you need as specifically as you are able. None of us can help until we know what help you need.)
Branstorming and suggestions would be nice; motivation to push myself or believe in myself would be great too.
Hey Mark, oh my goodness that’s a long list of questions lol..
I’ll pick the last one. I moved to the States when I was 19. I left my family, my friends, my home and everything behind. My English wasn’t good because I started learning English when I was probably around 16 or 17. I took the TOEFL and SAT three times each to get an acceptance to my dream school.
When I first arrived in the States, I was pretty overwhelmed by cultural differences, new environment, and new food etc. Fast forward 5 years of struggles and hard work and pushing myself every day, I graduated from college with Departmental Honors and summa cum laude. I pursued my graduate school right after and graduated as a top student and Honors.
Though graduating with Honors and being recognized as a top student is huge, what I’m most proud of is my persistence and determination. It’s easy for people to say that I’m born smart or make such comments. But as a person who has gone through it, I can 100% say it wasn’t easy and I had many moments I felt like I was close to giving up. I’m happy to be where I am and proud of myself for never giving up on my goals.
Thanks rrmelecio!
Yes, I agree with Mark. I’d love to hear more about your SMART goal, and cheer you up on achieving it! 😉

By the way, what do you mean by being a practical Virtual Assistant? I have some friends who’d like to become a Virtual Assistant. Curious to hear more.
Love both of you guys’ response. Definitely agreed that seeking joy rather than focusing on negatives is important for happiness. I do feel that I expect a lot from myself or pressure myself a lot (perhaps more than I should be), which in turn leads me to feel unhappy.
Interesting question, Mark! I think I can try being more gentle with myself.
Another question for you guys! Would you say you’re happy with your life?
Hi rrmelecio,
I definitely feel your pain as family is also very important to me. Even though my parents raised me, they had a lot of relationship problems that made my childhood not as pleasant or I too envied my friends’ parents and wondered/wished to have born in a different family.
I’m not sure what I’d do if I were in your shoes. But I’ve worked so hard to make my mother proud of me since I was little. Sometimes I wonder if everything I’ve done was to make her proud of me. Fast forward, three years ago when I accomplished one of my major goals, I felt empty or unhappy inside. Since then, I’ve been listening to myself more, making my own decisions and I haven’t been happier than before.
While I do understand the value/importance of putting family first, I realized that you can’t lose yourself or your life doing so.
