It’s not romantic and I know the words will provoke some, but any relationship – EVERY relationship – is simply an exchange of value. There is no purpose to a relationship unless your presence in my life makes my life better; unless me being in your life makes your life better.  Good friends are hard to find. And here is how to make friends that will make your life better.

The Right Friends for You

Every relationship will come to a time(s) where you need to decide if the other person’s presence in your life adds to it… or detracts.

“Start spending time with the right people – These are the people you enjoy, who love and appreciate you … the ones who make you feel more alive, and not only embrace who you are now, but also embrace and embody who you want to be….” ~ Marc & Angel

Focus your energy where your energy is returned. The “friend” who is never available and doesn’t return phone calls? The partner who would be PERFECT… if only they [valued you, understood you, just tried harder… fill in the blank]? The friends who “just have tough lives” so that they’ve always relied on you to support them (but never seem to be there for you)?

These are signs that they are not the right friend or partner for you. And the faster you honor and accept that and let them go… the more room and energy you make for people who will magnify you and inspire you to step up to your best self. You are not going to change or make others into the people you want them to be. What a mess that would be (hell… what a mess that HAS BEEN).

We Are All Broken in Some Way

We’re ALL broken in one way or another. But look for people who have taken the time they’ve needed to become emotionally available, healthy, healed, and whole.

And, if you’re the one who’s still broken… take YOUR time to become healthy, healed and whole so that you have love, compassion, time and energy to contribute to others.

The codependent popular myth is that I’ll sacrifice… for you; but then the deal is, that YOU are supposed to sacrifice for me.

What a mess.

Just clean your life up. Do what you need to do to solve your problems and become emotionally available, whole, healthy and healed. Do that so that you, not only, can take incredible care of yourself…. Do that not only so that you’ve developed a fulfilling and successful life for yourself…. Do that so that you have enough energy left to help take care of someone else.

And then look for others who have done the same.

The idea applies ten-fold when discussing dating, romantic relationship and love: look for someone emotionally available, whole, healthy and healed, so that ideally your romantic partner is also your best friend.

In that way 1 + 1 becomes 3… rather than “you and I are one” (leaving us both half the person we should be.

And your “How to Find Friends” becomes finding good friends that make your life better.
